Philly Reading Coach

Be a Reading Buddy! Philly Reading Coaches (PRC) is all about making reading fun, engaging, and child-led for K–3rd grade students. As a Reading Coach, you’ll help your student build confidence and discover the joy of reading through one-on-one sessions.

We ask for a minimum commitment of one hour per week, but volunteers are welcome to serve more!

Each session includes:

• Greeting your student and helping them choose books that match their interests and reading level
  • Reading aloud, listening as they read, and offering gentle support as needed
  • Helping your student with fun literacy worksheets, activities, and games to foster learning and a love of reading
  • Completing quick reading logs together at the end of each session

Reading Coaches offer encouragement, guidance, and a consistent presence to help children grow as readers and find excitement in every page.

Program Aide

Support the Magic Behind the Scenes! Program Aides play a key role in making Philly Reading Coaches (PRC) run smoothly. As a Program Aide, you’ll help create a welcoming, organized space for reading to happen and support both the Site Coordinator and volunteer Reading Coaches.

This role requires a commitment of approximately 3 hours per week, with Aides attending both weekly reading sessions.

In this leadership support role, Program Aides:

• Arrive 30 minutes early to set up the space and prepare materials
  • Welcome volunteers, assist with sign-in, and help distribute student folders
  • Track attendance and communicate absences to the Site Coordinator
  • Support reading pair assignments and ensure everyone is ready to go
  • Step in to read with students as needed
  • Keep the space tidy and organized, sort and shelve books by reading level, and manage new book deliveries
  • Collect student folders after each session and confirm that Reading Logs are completed

If you’re organized, dependable, and ready to jump in wherever needed, this is a great way to help young readers thrive while supporting a dedicated team.

PRC Ambassadors (for current Reading Coaches only)

PRC Ambassadors help spread the word about Philly Reading Coaches in the community. Open to current Reading Coaches and Program Aides, this role is perfect for those who are passionate about our mission and want to help us grow.

As a PRC Ambassador, you’ll:

• Distribute flyers at local schools, libraries, businesses, and community centers
  • Represent PRC at tabling events and community gatherings
  • Share your experience to inspire new volunteers to get involved

The time commitment is flexible, and your support helps us connect more children with caring reading coaches.
